Instagram stories as a feature is linked to Meta's North Star Metric, which is DAU. The feature is designed in such a way that it encourages DAU as well as Sessions per user. Hence if the feature is leading to the same, it is successful else it is not.
There could me multiple other input metrics around adoption, retention & repeat on both the supply & demand side.
