Design a garage door opener

First, I’d clarify scope. In 2026, a garage door opener is not a motor or a remote, it’s a connected access control system. So, I’d design the full product: hardware, software, mobile app and access control management. Then I’d define users. Primary user is the homeowner who needs reliable, daily, low friction access. Secondary users are family members needing shared access, delivery driver needing one time entry, and technicians needing controlled temporary access. Each has a different trust level, and the design must reflect that. The core jobs to be done are four: a. open when arriving, b. close when leaving, c. verify the status when away, and grant access without handing out physical remotes. The biggest pain points are behavioral not mechanical, forgetting to close, not knowing status when away, and managing multiple people without losing security control. My design priorities in order: reliability first, remote status visibility second, flexible access management third, convenience last. The interface should be minimal, one button, clear status indicator, and a mobile app for remote control and alerts. Security is built in from day one with rolling codes and time bound permissions for guests and delivery drivers. Success metrics are simple how many times doors fail to open. How many safety incidents occurs and how many guests get access without needing a physical remote.
